Academic Coordinating Committee

The Academic Coordinating Committee reported to the Senate of Mount Saint Vincent University. All committee members were members of Senate.

Series forms part of Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of minutes, memorandums and supporting material generated by the activities of the Academic Coordinating Committee (1978- 1986) which included furthering the academic programs of the university and coordinating the University's assets in the field of admissions, recruitment policy, registration, academic regulations and policies, continuing education, both credit and non-credit, complementary to academic programs.

Ad Hoc Committee on University Government

The Executive Committee of Senate established an ad hoc committee on University Government (also known as the University Government Committee) at a meeting held 1st October, 1970. This committee established other ad hoc and sub-committees when needed to examine various issues of interest to Senate.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of minutes of meetings of the Sub-Committee for the Study of Senate Structure, a subcommittee of the Committee on University Government (1970-1971). Records were generated when the committee studied the function, membership and composition of Senate and the criteria for election to Senate. Series also consists of memos and minutes of meetings of the Ad Hoc Committee on Senate Composition, formed in October 1979 by the Committee on University Government, to study the composition of Senate. This ad hoc committee generated these records when studying the composition of Senate with respect to the further representation of part-time students and Student Services (1979-1980).

Committee on Academic Policy and Planning

The Committee on Academic Policy and Planning is currently a standing committee of Senate, although prior to 1966 it reported to the President. Until 1987 this Committee was referred to as the Academic Committee, the Committee on Academic Affairs, or the Academic Affairs Committee. The function of the Academic Committee was to act as liaison between the Faculty and the University Administration in academic matters and to deal with academic matters in general. The Academic Policy and Planning Committee oversees the Graduate Studies Committee (which was a Sub-Committee struck in 1969 which met until 1989), the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (was the Curriculum Sub-Committee until 1987) and the Alternative Approaches to Teaching Committee. In 1988 it also oversaw the Cooperative Education Sub-Committee and the Departmental Review Sub-Committee. The purpose of the Committee is to serve as consultant and advisor to the Senate on matters dealing with academic policy and planning

The membership of the Committee is the Vice-President (Academic), as chairperson, the Dean of Professional Studies and the Dean of Arts and Science, the Director of Distance Learning and Continuing Education, the Registrar (non-voting), six faculty members, elected by faculty: two representatives from Arts & Science, two representatives from Professional Studies, and two members at large and one third or fourth-year student representative named by student council. Chairs of the Committee have included Sister Margaret Molloy (1973-1974) and Dr. W. J. Shelton (1979-1980).

established or discontinued in the university; to consider proposals from the Undergraduate Curriculum and Graduate Studies Committee as appropriate; to recommend to Senate academic priorities of all undergraduate and graduate courses and programs; review and make recommendations regarding any agreement for academic cooperation made with organizations or institutions external to the university; form ad hoc committees of academic policy and planning as required to further the development of policy and planning of programs which at certain times may require concentrated attention and specific membership expertise; exercise such other functions, powers and duties as may from time to time be conferred on it by the Senate; nominate one of its members to the Graduate
Studies Committee. Fonds consists of inter-office memorandums and minutes of meetings of the Committee for Academic Affairs (1957-1987, 1991-1992); memorandums and guidelines for new course offerings used in decisions made by the Committee (1972-1974);
minutes of meetings of the Policy and Planning Sub-Committee (1979-1980); Three-Year Review of Courses and Programmes (1978-1979); preliminary report of the Sub-Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies (ca. 1970), and correspondence of the Review Sub-Committee (1986-1987).

Fonds also consists of consists of memos proposing a Graduate Studies Committee (1969), which was created that year to recommend the requirements for admission to Graduate study reporting to Senate. After 1989 the Graduate Studies Committee was a Subcommittee
of the Committee on Academic Policy and Planning and reported to Senate through that Standing committee. The membership of the Graduate Studies Sub-Committee
includes a Dean, as Chair, the Registrar, and one faculty member from the Committee on Academic Policy and Planning. Elected members include a member for each department having a graduate program, and one graduate student from each department having graduate programs, to be named by the Graduate Students Association.

Committee on Appointment, Promotion and Tenure or Permanence

The Committee on Appointment, Promotion and Tenure or Permanence is a Standing Committee of Senate, and was known in the past as the Committee on Appointments, Rank and Tenure. This Committee is responsible for matters dealing with the awarding of
academic rank, tenure and permanence to administrators with academic rank who are not members of the bargaining unit represented by the Mount Saint Vincent Faculty Association. The Vice-President Academic acts as Chair. This Committee communicates the decision
reached in each case of appointment, promotion and tenure or permanence to the Chair of Senate, to the President and/or to the Board of Governors, as appropriate. The Committee considers individuals recommended for Emeritus status, and makes recommendations to Senate concerning the granting of emeritus status. Members of the committee include four
elected members of faculty serving as members of the University Review Committee/University Review Committee for Librarians.

Series forms part of Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of records generated by various ad hoc and sub-committees of the Committee on Appointment, Promotion and Tenure or Permanence, whose functions included evaluating and determining the appropriate academic rank which academic administrators should receive upon appointment; and to evaluate whether or not the awarding of tenure or permanence in
an academic department (or jointly in several departments) is appropriate, as well to evaluate and determine whether or not the promotion to a higher rank is appropriate for academic administrators currently holding an academic rank at the Mount, and to perform all
evaluations according to the criteria and procedures approved by Senate. Records include the Minutes of the Ad Hoc Committee on Faculty Appointment (1974) and the Ad Hoc Committee on Faculty Re-Appointment (1973), and the Sub-Committee on Faculty Appointments, Status, Promotion and Tenure (1970-1971); minutes of the Senate Review Committee for 14 November 1980, and correspondence of February 1980.

Committee on Cultural Affairs

The Committee on Cultural Affairs (also known as the Cultural Affairs Committee) was organized in 1966 for the purpose of serving as sponsor and coordinator of cultural affairs involving the University. This Committee reported to Senate and met twice a year. The membership of the Committee consisted of representatives from each of the following areas: Music, Fine arts, film programs, Drama, the Public Relations Director, the Dean of Students and one member-at-large, preferably from the English Department.

Committee on Information Technology and Services

In 1990 the Computer Advisory Committee was formed. Later known as the Committee on Information Technology and Services, this Committee was a standing Committee of Senate. The purpose of the Committee is to advise and recommend to Senate appropriate academic policies, guidelines, needs and priorities relating to the delivery of electronic information and network services at Mount Saint Vincent University, to include on occasion broader issues that affect the University community as a whole. Membership includes the Director of Information Technology and Services, and the Director of Distance learning and Continuing Education, as well as one member of Senate, four full-time members of faculty, and one
student member. The Committee meets at least four times a year.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of the minutes of the Computer Advisory Committee for 1990, generated by fulfilling the functions of the Committee, which include recommending to Senate policies and priorities regarding the acquisition and development of information technology and services to meet the academic needs, both instructional and research, of the University; to serve as an advisory committee to the Director of Information Technology and Services on the academic needs of the University; and to consult with academic departments regarding their priorities and needs for information technology.

Committee on Research and Publications

The Scholarship and Research Committee, reporting to the University administration, was established in 1969. It was known as the Committee on Research and Publications when moved from under Administration and was reporting to Senate in 1987. Functions of the Committee include reviewing and recommending on the University's research policy, and recommending annually on the internal funding of research; establishing criteria in the disbursement of monies received from granting councils and internal sources; assessing as peer reviewers applications from the faculty for funding for research project, and making recommendations regarding the allocation of research funds; encouraging publications; serving as the selection committee for the Award for Research Excellence; and serving as the Ethics Appeal Board for graduate and undergraduate projects. Membership includes the Director of Research as an ex-officio member, and four full-time members of faculty(elected) representing the areas of humanities, social sciences, sciences, and professional programs plus one member at large. At least one of these members is a member of Senate.

The Director of Research provides leadership for the administration of the University's research activities. The Research Office provides grant opportunities and reports on grants applied for and received. Full-time ongoing faculty and faculty with term appointments are eligible to apply for internal grants. The MSVU Research Office maintains a Research Inventory, updated on an annual basis, to highlight faculty research. Services offered by the Research Office include Assistance to Prepare a Large-Scale Collaborative Grant; Research Collaboration Workshop: Women and Gender; Aid to Scholarly Publications Grant Application; New Scholars Standard Grant. The Research Office also collects Internal Grant Research Reports from MSVU researchers.

The Research Office is responsible for providing support to the University Research Ethics Board (UREB). With the UREB, the Director promotes educational activities about research ethics. The Research Office provides the administrative support for the UREB.

Committee on Teaching and Learning

The Committee on Teaching and Learning is a standing committee of Senate. This Committee was originally known as the Committee on Continuing Education and Summer School until it was folded into the Committee on Teaching ca. 1995.

The purpose of the Committee on Continuing Education and Summer School was to provide for the continuous re-examination of the continuing education philosophy and policy of the University to make recommendations to Senate, and to ensure the provision of challenging and diversified continuing education programs. The membership of the committee included the Director of Continuing Education and Summer School as Chairman, three faculty members elected by Senate for three-year terms, and two students elected by Senate for one-year terms, one from among the continuing education students, the other from the undergraduate academic body. The committee met monthly during the academic year and held additions meetings during the summer as required.

The purpose of the Committee on Teaching and Learning is to contribute to the maintaining, fostering and appreciating excellence in teaching and learning at the Mount. Functions of the committee are: to foster and recognize excellence in teaching; to monitor new developments in teaching approaches and' pedagogies, and to inform Senate of such developments; to consider and advise on academic matters and planning for areas of innovative education such as distributed learning, co-operative education and non-credit programming; to organize and support professional development opportunities in teaching for faculty, possibly in collaboration with similar committees or institutes at other Atlantic universities; to consider and bring recommendations to Senate on policy matters affecting teaching and learning, including instruments for student ratings of teaching; to provide a forum for the discussion of curriculum, pedagogy, teaching and learning consistent with the University's mission; to monitor the availability of resources related to teaching enhancement and to make recommendations to the library for the acquisition of such resources; to act as a clearing house for the dissemination of information on teaching enhancement to members of the university communities; to serve as the selection committee for the Instructional Leadership Award; and to act as an appeal committee for Prior Learning Assessment Review.

The membership includes the Vice-President (Academic) and the Director of Distance and Learning and Continuing Education, both ex-officio. Members also include four members of faculty and a winner of the Alumnae Teaching Award, as well as one student chosen by the Student's Union.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of minutes of meetings and memorandums generated by the Committee on Continuing Education and Summer School (1971-1979) resulting from the functions of reassessing on a continuing basis the function of extension, continuing education, and summer school in a changing society to meet the needs of society and the University; effect long-range planning of courses to avoid duplication; examining the content for courses no in the regular calendar; planning calendars for publications; meeting with the corresponding body at Dalhousie University; consulting with the department and dean to secure professors for summer school and continuing education courses and, encouraging appropriate department to provide research on the development of adult courses and on patters of adult learning; memorandums generated by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Expansion (1974-1975) which was formed in 1974 to explore the ways and means of expanding the Mount Saint Vincent University course offerings outside of the normal day-time period. Communications Committee

The Communications Committee was formed to keep the University community informed of Senate decisions and concerns. Senate then accepted the principle of open meetings and posting of agendas, and the Communications Committee was dissolved 25 October 1971, as the purpose for which the Committee was formed no longer existed. In 1971, the Coordinating Committee on Communications was created, reporting to the President's Office, and not Senate.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is a standing committee of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate, originally formed in 1969. The committee currently consists of the President, as Chair, the Vice-President (Academic) and the Secretary of Senate (non-voting). It also consists of four faculty members of Senate on a rotating basis, and a student Senator. The faculty and student members are all elected. The functions of the Executive Committee include preparing the agenda for each Senate meeting, and acting between regular Senate meeting on matters of an administrative nature which would normally come to Senate but which require immediate decision. Such decisions are ratified at the Senate meeting immediately following.
