Senate minutes

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of meeting minutes, with agendas and supporting documents {1966-1997) supporting the functions of determining the courses of study and standards for admission to the University and for continued enrolment therein and the requirements for certificates, diplomas and degrees; establishing procedures for the evaluation of student performance; approving recipients of certificates, diplomas and degrees, including honorary degrees, to be granted by the University; providing for the convening and conduct of convocations; dealing with all matters arising in connection with fellowships, scholarships, bursaries, medals, prizes and other awards; being responsible for library policy; determining the academic qualifications for appointment and promotion of faculty; determining the academic terms on which any faculty, schools, institute, department, chair or course of instruction may be established or discontinued and on which any agreement for academic co-operation may be made with individuals or groups outside the University; and regulating the conduct, activities and discipline of students; and appointing an executive committee and such other committees as it may deem advisable and delegate to any such committee any of its powers.; letters informing committee members of their positions on various Senate committees (1990); a Report to Senate from the Committee on Academic Structure (14 Feb 1979) generated when the Committee was given the mandate to investigate all matters pertaining to the distribution of responsibility and communications throughout the University. The position of Vice President Academic was created as a result of this report.

Reports

Series consists of reports from the years 1972 to 1979 detailing academic requirements for attending the Institute, reading materials available at the library pertaining to the subject of the Institute, and lists of booklets and tapes borrowed by other institutions for the purposes of teaching students. The series includes entries on assignments to be completed by students during the program, as well as schedules for the first day of attendance (called orientation). The series also includes information on the history of the institute, in addition to the physical facilities present at Mount Saint Vincent University, where the Institute was to be held. The series also contains a report on the content of the Family Life Institute program held at St. Francis Xavier University. The series details the courses that were taken, as well as a section with questions that students could answer to rate their experience of the program once it was completed. The reports include lists of faculty members who were responsible for teaching the students. The reports also include correspondence between the Institute and those with the credentials to teach the courses offered during the program. The series includes an article on marriage, an article on sex education, a monthly letter from the Royal Bank of Canada concerning retirement, and an essay titled Theosa ’77: An Inquiry into Canadian Theological Studies of Aging by Sister S. Michael Guinan, Ph.D. The series also included narrative descriptions of the activities performed at the Institute, in addition to the number of students and teachers present. The series contains job postings for potential professors, outlining their responsibilities for teaching and making materials available to students.

Series consists of records pertaining to MSVU Teaching and Learning Centre projects and partnerships, including the non-credit program (1992, 1999-2016), Management Development for Women (1992-2012), MATRIX: a math empowerment project (1996), courses for junior high and high school students (1993, 1995, 2013), Christianity: a special program for adults (1981-1993), French for the Future Forum (2016), Chartered Management Accountants accelerated program learning lab (2011-2013), Q-tips: English immersion program (2002), Quebec teachers English program (2000-2001), faculty mentoring (2011), and Commonwealth of Learning (1998-2004). Series also consists of records related to Elder Learners (1988-1993), the Nova Scotia Centre for Aging (1996, 2013), and Experience Unlimited at MSVU (1985-1989).

Series contains information on international programs and partnerships, including reports on Barbados (2003), Trinidad (2001), Mexico (2000-2001), and Jamaica (2002), as well as the University of St. Martin (2005-2015) and Bermuda College (2000-2018).

Series also includes various materials pertaining to online learning: E-Learning (2002), Moodle (2010-2016), Elluminate/Collaborate (2011-2012), Open Learning (200-), African Virtual University (1999-2000), Canadian Virtual University (2001-2003), and the tech-enabled learning working committee (2015).
