Letter written by Sir John A. Macdonald to John Sandfield Macdonald advising him to write to James McCrae of Wolfe Island at the suggestion of M [?] Stafford, the Catholic Priest of Wolfe Island, and acknowledging the retirement of “Sherman.”

Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-01-10 – 1891-06-06) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving between 1867-1873, and 1878-1891. Macdonald is remembered for having been a part of the construction of the Canada Pacific Railway and main components of Canada’s constitution, however he also was responsible for implementing the residential school system in Canada, as well as the head tax on Chinese immigrants.

Cardinal (John Henry) Neuman (1801-02-21 – 1890-08-11) was a Catholic Cardinal who had previously been an Anglican priest and who was canonized as a saint in 2019. He was a philosopher, historian, and writer who was known for his exodus from the Anglican church and his later acceptance into the Catholic Church.

Letter 34 : Joseph Howe to “Ross”

Letter from Joseph Howe to a subject called “My dear Ross” connecting about some deaths they mutually grieved. The letter is personal in nature and Howe and Ross seem to have a close relationship. Howe died only 3 months after the letter was written, and he expresses feelings in the letter that he may not survive much longer but wants to make it back to die among his “own kindred.”

Joseph Howe (1804-1873) was a political figure, journalist, and premier of Nova Scotia. He was opposed to confederation led the anti-confederation movement in Nova Scotia. He became Nova Scotia’s Lietenant-govornor only three weeks before his death.
