A letter which Edward Blake wrote during his time as leader of the Liberal party of Canada to Reformers in his party to organize themselves into committees for the purposes of securing voters.

Edward Blake (1833-1912) was the second premier of Ontario and leader of the liberal party between 1880 and 1882. He was known for being excessively active in party matters and activities and gave long speeches, sometimes up to six hours in length.

A letter from Cardinal Neuman in reply to Samual Langley which says that his age prevents him from sending a proper reply to Langley’s previous letter.

Cardinal (John Henry) Neuman (1801-02-21 – 1890-08-11) was a Catholic Cardinal who had previously been an Anglican priest and who was canonized as a saint in 2019. He was a philosopher, historian, and writer who was known for his exodus from the Anglican church and his later acceptance into the Catholic Church.

Letter from Alexander Mackenzie (second Prime Minister of Canada) to Mr. Corcoran expressing sympathies for his double loss and addressing his “domestic affliction.” He addresses sincere condolences and offers advice on grief.

Alexander Mackenzie (1822-01-28 – 1892-04-17) was born in Logierait, Scotland and began working as a stonemason at age 13. After emigrating to Canada and aiding in the construction of many buildings including the Bank of Upper Canada in Port Sarnia, Ontario, he began gaining political notoriety for his liberalism. On November 5, 1873, after the MacDonald Government fell to the Pacific Scandal, Mackenzie was put in charge of organizing an administration. He promptly responded by calling an election which he won. He served as second Canadian Prime Minister between 1873 and 1878. He became the president of The North American Life Assurance Company in 1881, and died in 1892 after losing his voice to a mysterious ailment and suffering a stroke.

THE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF NATIVE STUDIES V, 1(1985):61-74 cites Charles Mackenzie, brother of Alexander Mackenzie, as having an ongoing client/lawyer relationship with a Mr. Corcoran regarding legal disputes. See Note 40.

Letter from William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire to S. Langley thanking him for sending him letters which appeared in the “Belfast Northern Whig,” an Irish newspaper.

William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire (1808-04-27 – 1891-12-21) was a British nobleman who held carious parliamentary seats between 1829-1831, he then served as the Chancellor of the University of London, followed by the University of Cambridge and Victoria University. He was a professor of physics and founded the Royal Agricultural Society, as well as being a trustee of the British Museum.
