Autographed Signed Letters of Eminent Persons

The Autographed Signed Letters of Eminent Persons series contains individual letters and autographs from literary, political and historical figures worldwide, though they are predominantly British and Canadian. The records consist of full letters, cut-outs of autographs from letters and cards, and manuscripts written by authors and poets. It was divided into three sections by its original creator: autographed signed letters, miscellaneous autograph signatures, and miscellaneous letters and letter fragments.

Material found in MacDonald Collection books

The Material found in MacDonald Collection Books series contains various accompanying letters, articles, photos and other ephemera that were found within the leaves of MacDonald Collection Books. They are important documents as they provide information as to the provenance of the book, or may contain information about the author, bookseller, or original owner of the book. The series predominantly contains correspondence, often from the author to the owner, though newspaper articles, usually about the author or edition, also feature heavily in this series. The material was removed from the books and was organized into files, with each file corresponding to the specific book in the file's title.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee was formed to keep the University community informed of Senate decisions and concerns. Senate then accepted the principle of open meetings and posting of agendas, and the Communications Committee was dissolved 25 October 1971, as the purpose for which the Committee was formed no longer existed. In 1971, the Coordinating Committee on Communications was created, reporting to the President's Office, and not Senate.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of interoffice memorandums, reports and minutes generated by the Communications Committee (1969-1971) when keeping the University community informed of Senate decisions and concerns.

Committee on Cultural Affairs

The Committee on Cultural Affairs (also known as the Cultural Affairs Committee) was organized in 1966 for the purpose of serving as sponsor and coordinator of cultural affairs involving the University. This Committee reported to Senate and met twice a year. The membership of the Committee consisted of representatives from each of the following areas: Music, Fine arts, film programs, Drama, the Public Relations Director, the Dean of Students and one member-at-large, preferably from the English Department.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of minutes and reports generated by the Cultural Affairs Committee (1970-1972) when cooperating with other institutions in sponsoring cultural affairs, coordinating cultural events sponsored by departments or individual faculty members, and keeping a calendar of these events.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence between members of the Family Life Institute, as well as correspondence between the Institute and other corporate bodies. The series includes letters regarding employment, such as curriculum vitae records, as well as payment for offering services at the Family Life Institute. There are also letters between Sister Mary Olga McKenna and those who would present a topic of significance to the institute, such as ‘Living Together’ or Adolescent Behavior.’ The letters also occasionally only thank the participant for attending. Rather than offering payment. Some letters in this series were created in response to earlier conversations, such as the interview potential of future employees at the Institute. The series also contains correspondence between Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada and Sister Mary Olga McKenna regarding the availability of educational booklets. Other letters discuss speeches by Margaret Mead, reflections on participation in the Family Life Institute of summer 1973, and receipts indicating membership in receiving copies of the Transaction magazine. There are also several incomplete letters addressed to various corporate and government bodies, such as the Department of Public Health and Ortho Pharmaceutical (Canada) Ltd. The series also includes letters that confirm the receipt of demonstration kits from the ‘Growing Up’ series of lectures.

Undergraduate Admissions and Scholarship Committee

The Undergraduate Admissions and Scholarship Committee is a standing committee of Senate. The first meeting of the newly-formed Committee on Admissions and Awards (originally there was separate Committee on Scholarships and one on Admissions) was held December 1966, and at various times this Committee has been known as the Committee on Admissions, Scholarships and Bursaries. This title was later changed to the Committee on Admissions and Scholarships.

The Committee serves as a consultant and advisor to the Senate on admission and scholarship policy matters. Members include the Registrar, the Dean of Professional Studies or the Dean of Arts and Science (alternate annually), the Assistant Registrar Admissions and the Financial Aid Officer. Also includes six elected faculty members, three from each division.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University Senate fonds and consists of minutes of the Committee on Admissions (1964-1966), and the Committee on Scholarships (1960-1966), which were brought together when Mount Saint Vincent College became a University. Series also consists of minutes of the Committee on Admissions, Scholarships and Bursaries (1966-1975) generated when filling the following functions: recommending standards for both general and program-specific admission to undergraduate programs; recommending general and specific recruitment activities to attract student in keeping with the university academic objectives; evaluating exception and non-standard applications that fall outside established policies and to recommend appropriate action to Senate; recommending undergraduate scholarship standards and to work actively with Development initiatives in the specific area of endowment development to support and encourage university academic objectives and, reviewing annually the standing of students for awards, to receive and approve faculty and departmental nominations, and to allocate both entrance and in-course awards and renewals. The Committee also allocates the bursary portion of the scholarship budget.

Governing Athletic Organizations

This series consists of records concerning the intercollegiate athletics programs the Mount was a member of. Programs include the Atlantic Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Canadian Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Union, and the Atlantic Universities Athletic Association. Included are correspondence, various reports, minutes, by-laws, championship lists, tournament lists, and participation lists.

Series forms part of the Mount Saint Vincent University School of Nursing fonds and consists of minutes and correspondence of various committees which were associated with the School of Nursing at Mount Saint Vincent University These committees include the Library Committee: Dalhousie/MSVU (1972-1973), Advisory Committee (1965-1971), Fourth Year Basic Degree Committee (1973-1974), Admissions Committee (1971-1976), Curriculum Committee (1973-1974), Coordinating Committee - Baccalaureate Program (1974-1975), Third Year Sub-Committee (1971-1972), and the Four Years Committee (1973-1974). The series also includes a report of the Review Committee of the School of Nursing at Dalhousie University (1970) and a report produced by the Advisory Committee of the School of Nursing and the Committee on Studies for the Canadian Conference of University Schools of Nursing (1965).

Meeting minutes

Series consists of meeting minutes of the Family Life Institute from the years 1970 to 1978, as well as records pertaining to councils and committees held during this time. Series includes pamphlets for courses taken during the summer of 1972 and 1978, as well as correspondence from the Director of Youth Education to the members of the Nova Scotia Advisory Committee on Family Life. The series includes the meeting minutes of the Advisory Committee on Family Life Education in 1974, as well as Inter-Office Memorandum messages between members of the Family Life Institute. The series also includes lists of activities performed during the Advisory Committee. There are also meeting minutes for the years 1972, between the months of February and April. There is an item titled reflections of the family, detailing the 9th annual meeting of the Vanier Institute of the Family from September 14th to 16th 1973. The Transition magazine is present as well, highlighting events and activities performed by the Vanier Institute; the magazine is available in both French and English. There is a newspaper article detailing the events of a conference at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro on the weekend prior to Monday, January 28, 1974. Incidentally, this item was paired with the report on the Nova Scotia Conference on Family Life held from January 25 to 27, 1974 at the Nova Scotia Teachers College. There is also a list of participants in the conference, arranged in alphabetical order. There is also a file with the Nova Scotia Conference on Family Life-Nucleus Committee, which discusses nature of the meetings, as well as including correspondence between members of the Committee. The file contains a schedule of events to be conducted during the Committee meeting, and it also includes an evaluation of the success of the meeting based on the responses of the participants.
