Elizabeth Seton Lectures

This series consists of recordings of lectures given as part of the Seton Lectures. The Elizabeth Seton lecture series was founded in 1978 when the Sisters of Charity established an endowment fund for a lecture series with the general theme of Christian presence in the world. This lectures series was intended to reinforce Mount Saint Vincent University's commitment to understand the truth, intellectual vigour, and social responsibility.

The lecture series is named after the founder of the Sisters of Charity in North America, Elizabeth Seton.

Teaching activities

The Teaching Activities series contains mainly course lecture notes, discussion questions, and in class activities including copies of quizzes and tests. The series also contains copies of primary source documents that were assigned as required reading to students.

The records cover the years 1970 to 2011 and include material from Kenneth Dewar’s time with various universities, including Mount Saint Vincent University, University of Victoria, University of Toronto and Wilfred Laurier University. History courses covered include The West and the World, Social and Cultural History of Canada, History of Childhood, Canadian Political Culture, Pre-Confederation and post-Confederation Canada, Canadian women and upper-level history seminars on various topics.

Committee work

The Committee work series contains records relating to Dr. Kenneth Dewar’s participation in various university committees, mainly at Mount Saint Vincent University.

Professor Dewar was an active member and chair of the History Department at MSVU. Files related to this committee work include statistical information about the history department that were discussed in meetings, such as enrolment, faculty and academic plan data. The records also include memos, correspondence and evaluations. Agenda and meeting minutes cover announcements, regular business and issues related to the university or departmental programs.

Other committee files cover work done with the Library Committee, Committee on Academic Policy and Planning, Arts & Science Promotion Committee, Strategic Planning, Bookstore Consultative Review Committee. The series also contains documents, such as reports, relevant for discussions in these committees, including academic implications of disproportionate funding, the Dalhousie-Mount shuttle bus, senate, evaluations, planning documents, and reviews, among others.

Charles Clarke research files

This series contains research and publication files related to Dr. Kenneth Dewar’s work on Charles Clarke (1857-1924), psychiatrist and politician from Elora, Ontario. The records contain copies of primary and secondary source documents sourced from various archives. The series also includes hand written notes written by Dewar about these documents for his book ‘Charles Clarke: Pen and Ink Warrior’. The series also contains files related to the publication process, such as funding and submissions to publishers. There are a number of documents related to McGill-Queen’s University Press, who published the book in 2002.
