Administrative history
Garnet Rebekah Lodge no. 30 was a unit, or lodge, of the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
The Rebekahs (previously the Daughters of Rebekah) is an international service-oriented organization and a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. It was initially designed as the female auxiliary of the IOOF, but now allows both female and male members.
Custodial history
These materials belonged to Edna M. Mitchell who collected the records during her time as member of the Rebekah Lodge since 1961. She passed away in 2018 and her Estate donated the records to the Halifax Public Library to be part of the Local History Collection. HPL donated these records to the Mount after determining they was not a good fit for their collection.
Scope and content
This fonds consists of records pertaining to membership in the Rebekah Lodge. The records belonged primarily to Edna M. Mitchell, though other names can be seen inscribed in some of the records. The records were accumulated principally during her membership at Garnet Rebekah Lodge no. 30, though some earlier materials appear to originate from a period when she was part of Mizpah Rebekah Lodge no. 5.
The records are mainly booklets that members used regularly at assemblies. This includes ceremony orders and proceedings (e.g. re-dedication ceremony), cypher text, a questions and answers booklet, constitution and by-laws, charge book and a collection of articles by Myrtle Russell, president of the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies. There is also one photograph in the fonds depicting Edna M. Mitchell and fellow members at Garnet Lodge.
