Garnet Rebekah Lodge no. 30 fonds

This fonds consists of records pertaining to membership in the Rebekah Lodge. The records belonged primarily to Edna M. Mitchell, though other names can be seen inscribed in some of the records. The records were accumulated principally during her membership at Garnet Rebekah Lodge no. 30, though some earlier materials appear to originate from a period when she was part of Mizpah Rebekah Lodge no. 5.

The records are mainly booklets that members used regularly at assemblies. This includes ceremony orders and proceedings (e.g. re-dedication ceremony), cypher text, a questions and answers booklet, constitution and by-laws, charge book and a collection of articles by Myrtle Russell, president of the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies. There is also one photograph in the fonds depicting Edna M. Mitchell and fellow members at Garnet Lodge.

Gingerbread House fonds

Fonds consists of meeting minutes of Gingerbread House (1973), guidelines for parents, flyers and forms, correspondence (1973-1974), background material, Charter and procedures for Gingerbread House, including a proposal presented to the MSVU Board of Governors (1973) and correspondence (1973). Fonds includes material related to discussions concerning the need for day care at MSVU (1971-1972), and minutes and reports of the MSVU Day Care Committee, and feasibility study materials (1971-1972).

Hagen family fonds

The fonds consists of records belonging to Alice Egan (Hagen) and her daughter Rachel Dickinson (Hagen).

The first item is an autograph book dating from 1882 to 1887 belonging to Alice Egan. The book contains messages, well-wishes, poems and autographs written by family and friends, predominantly from the period when Alice was a student at Mount Saint Vincent Academy.

There are also 2 printed event programmes from Mount Saint Vincent Academy that were donated by Rachel. The programmes cover Closing Exercises of intermediate and junior pupils of Academy Mount Saint Vincent (19 June 1917) and the pageant commemorating the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Mount Saint Vincent Academy in 1924. Rachel’s younger sister Kathleen acted in the pageant, and Rachel played the second violin.

The Pageant programme provides important context to the scenes being acted out and that are captured in various photographs from this period which can be found in other fonds at Mount Saint Vincent University Archives.

Three large photographs include class pictures inside a classroom, outside the Academy buildings and on the campus tennis court. The fonds also includes a booklet of select views of Mount Saint Vincent Academy, including buildings, interiors and outdoor spaces.

Fonds consists of minutes of meetings of the Inter-University Committee (1970-1971) which include minutes of the sub-committee to explore cooperation with the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD). Also consists of existing agreements on cooperation between Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University (1973), and NSCAD (1971).

Kenneth Dewar fonds

This fonds contains records created and accumulated by Dr. Kenneth Dewar during the course of his career as a professor of History. The fonds consists of four main series: Teaching activities, Committee work, Frank H. Underhill research and Charles Clarke research.

The Teaching activities series includes course outlines, readings, lecture and discussion notes for various courses that were taught by Dr. Dewar. These include courses at Mount Saint Vincent University, University of Toronto, University of Victoria and Wilfred Laurier University.

The Committee work series includes minutes, memoranda and reports from various committees on which Dr. Dewar participated in during his time at Mount Saint Vincent University. These include Department of History Committee, Committee on Academic Policy and Planning, Library Committee, and the Arts and Science Promotion Committee.

The fonds also contains Dr. Dewar’s research files, notably his work on Frank H. Underhill and Charles Clarke. In these series, types of records that can be found include photocopies of primary and secondary source documents that were consulted, notes, bibliography, publisher correspondence, and reviews.

Laura Carten fonds

The fonds contains Laura Carten's personal collection of autographs and letters, which she dubbed "Autographed Signed Letters of Eminent Persons". This collection of letters and autographs come from unknown sources, but were presumably bought or given to Laura Carten by those who knew of her interests in literature and history. The majority of the letters are from the 19th and early 20th centuries and are written between external correspondents and recipients. A smaller portion of the letters are written to Laura Carten in her capacity as a journalist, president of the Canadian Author's Association and literary enthusiast.
