Hagen (family)

Alice Hagen (née Egan) and her daughters Kathleen Hagen (Fay) and Rachel Hagen (Dickinson) were students at Mount Saint Vincent Academy.

Alice, born in 1872, graduated in 1887 and went on to study and teach at the Victoria School of Art and Design. Alice was an artist, specializing in pottery and china painting, and is considered a founder of the studio pottery movement in Nova Scotia. She was given medals in 1913 and 1916 for her involvement in the arts in Kingston, Jamaica. She remained an active potter well into her 90s. She passed away in 1972.

Alice's eldest daughter Rachel was born in 1902 and graduated in 1922 with a degree in Music (violin). Rachel was an accomplished musician and taught violin for many years in Bridgewater, N.S. Like her mother, Rachel also made pottery and promoted her mother's works by ensuring they were preserved in museums in Nova Scotia and Canada. Rachel passed away in 1993.

Hersom, Naomi

Naomi Hersom was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1927 to Fred and Anna Hersom. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1947 before beginning a career in teaching. In 1969 she received her Ph.D. in education from the University of Alberta and was appointed associate professor in the University of Alberta’s department of education. Noticing the limited number of women in the faculty, she started an association for women at the University of Alberta.

In 1975, she was appointed head of elementary education at the University of British Columbia, where she met and worked with Dr. Margaret Fulton who was dean of women at UBC at the time. Dr. Fulton encouraged Dr. Hersom to apply for the president position at Mount Saint Vincent, where she became the seventh president from 1986 to 1991.

During her tenure she oversaw the building of the E. Margaret Communications Centre, the expansion of distance education learning and Open Learning Programs, and the Initiative for Women in Science, which established a chair for women in science at MSVU and a science centre with classrooms, offices, and research spaces for students and faculty in the sciences and mathematics departments.

Ingalls, Wayne

Wayne Ingalls was born in 1939 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received a BA from the University of British Columbia and pursued his studies at University of Toronto, where he received his MA (1964) and his PhD (1971) in Classics. He taught at Bishops University (1967-1972), and later moved on to Mount Saint Vincent University where he worked for many years as a senior administrator. His posts included Assistant Academic Dean (1973- 1979), and Director of Research and Publications (1973-1979). This position changed in 1979 and Dr. Ingalls was then Director of Research and Special Projects (1979-1987), which included overseeing and developing the MSVU international development work. Dr. Ingalls also served as Assistant to the President for Research, Planning and Information Services (1987-1991), Acting Vice President Academic (1991-1992) and Interim Vice President Academic (1996-1997). Throughout his time at the Mount, Dr. Ingalls continued to teach and was Associate Professor of History and Speech and Drama (1973-1999). Since 1999
Dr. Ingalls has held the rank of Professor and will until 2005. Dr. Ingalls' research has ranged broadly, including early work on Homeric composition, then on institution building in higher education, especially in the third world, and most recently on children and education in ancient Greece. Education (1996); Phoenix (2002, 2000, 1982, 1972, 1971, 1970); Echos du monde classique (2001, 2000, 1998); Canadian Journal of Higher Education (1981), Mouseion
(2001), History of Education (1999), Higher Education (1995), and Transactions of the American Philological Association (1979, 1976). He has travelled widely in North America, Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa.
